Train Your Feet Like They Matter

Why we have always valued barefoot strength at Unlimited Fitness

You train your glutes. Your core. Your conditioning. But when was the last time you trained your feet?

Your feet contain 26 bones, 33 joints, and dozens of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that work as your body's natural suspension, steering, and propulsion system. But for most of us? That whole system has been left out of the training conversation.

At Unlimited Fitness, that changes now.

We’re bringing barefoot performance training into focus because when your feet are strong, mobile, and responsive, your entire kinetic chain lights up. More balance, more strength, more control.

Why most shoes (and Programs) miss the mark
Modern shoes often act like casts. Cushioned, narrow, stiff… they mute your body's natural feedback loop. And most training programs follow suit: zero emphasis on what’s happening below the ankle.

That means your feet lose strength, your posture suffers, and you become reliant on external support rather than internal function.

Unlimited is here to rebuild that connection
We believe true athleticism starts at ground level. And that means:

  • Training foot strength and control

  • Creating mobility and stability through the arch and ankle

  • Giving your body back its natural foundation

Clients might notice barefoot warm-ups, pre-lift foot prep, and cues in coaching sessions that bring attention to the base of your movement.

Jai’s story
Unlimited Fitness founder Jai Forster grew up playing representative basketball and competing at a high level across Victoria. He remembers drawing Nike and Air Jordan shoes at age 10, obsessed with their design.

But after years in the fitness industry, coaching thousands of clients, and studying human movement, one truth became clear: most modern shoes are poorly designed for real human performance.

"I’ve always wondered if anyone inside these large footwear brands ever considered foot health or long-term performance for their sponsored athletes. Where are the shoes with wide toe boxes? Where is the flat, stable base that lets the foot and leg do the work?"

These questions (and many more questions like it) turned into action through Unlimited Fitness, a brand that has been built around movement quality (which often starts with restoring function from the ground up).

In an ideal world, exercise your feet at home…
Here’s some of our coaching and homework topics:

  • Toe control drills (yes, individual toes!)

  • Balance work with foot pressure awareness

  • Foot activation during lifts like barefoot carries and single-leg work

  • Alignment resets using toe spacers or wedges

  • Education on footwear audits for everyday and gym shoes

You don’t have to go full barefoot all at once. In fact, we recommend you don’t. Like any training progression, it takes time.

Signs your feet are undertrained

  • Poor balance

  • Ankle stiffness or weakness

  • Arch collapse during squats or lunges

  • Overuse injuries in the knees or hips

Benefits of foot-first performance

  • Better posture and joint alignment

  • Increased proprioception and control

  • More efficient strength transfer in compound lifts

  • Reduced injury risk and recovery plateaus

  • A more connected, confident body

What you can do right now

  • Try the big toe test: Can you lift your big toe without the others? Now reverse it.

  • Go barefoot at home for 10 minutes a day

  • Ask your coach about foot prep or progression work

  • Check your shoes: Are they flexible? Flat? Wide in the toe box?
